The Library is directed by the American Congregational Association, which was established in 1853. The ACA charter stated that the organization was incorporated "for the purpose of establishing and perpetuating a library of religious history and literature of New England, and for the erection of a suitable building for the accommodation of the same, and for the use of charitable societies."
This mission is exactly what the library has been doing for the past 153 years. One of the biggest projects, started in 2005, was to build our online catalog. This endeavor is projected to take five years to complete. Unlike many repositories, we have included our archival holdings in the same database as our book collection. This streamline system is growing every day. If a patron cannot find what he or she is looking for, the staff encourage him/her to email or phone us for further information.
We are located on Boston's historic Beacon Hill in the Congregational House. The building was erected in 1898 for the specific purpose of having a permanent home for their library and also to serve as a headquarters for a number of Congregational organizations. Most of the original tenants have since moved on, but the building strives to be a center for helpful and benevolent groups.
Thank you for showing an interest in our organization. Please visit us again soon: we're changing every day!
